چکیده

Michael Platt is an associate professor of Neurobiology and Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University, and Director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience. His research focuses on the neuroethology and neuroeconomics of human and nonhuman primate behavior and cognition. Michael received his BA from Yale and his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, both in biological anthropology, and was a postdoctoral fellow in neuroscience at New York University.

What can emerging cortical face networks tell us about mature brain organisation?

This opinion paper suggests that developmental neuroimaging studies investigating emerging cortical networks for specific cognitive functions can contribute substantially to our understanding of mature brain organisation. Based on a review of the literature on the neural correlates of face processing abilities, this paper shows how developmental neuroimaging can help resolve outstanding issues,...

What can developmental disorders tell us about the neurocomputational constraints

The uneven cognitive phenotype in the adult outcome of Williams syndrome has led some researchers to make strong claims about the modularity of the brain and the purported genetically determined, innate specification of cognitive modules. Such arguments have particularly been marshalled with respect to language. We challenge this direct generalisation from adult phenotypic outcomes to genetic s...

What can developmental disorders tell us about the neurocomputational constraints that shape development? The case of Williams syndrome.

The uneven cognitive phenotype in the adult outcome of Williams syndrome has led some researchers to make strong claims about the modularity of the brain and the purported genetically determined, innate specification of cognitive modules. Such arguments have particularly been marshaled with respect to language. We challenge this direct generalization from adult phenotypic outcomes to genetic sp...

DT-MRI Tractography and its Application in Cognitive Neuroscience

Recent advancement of MRI techniques and development of new methods of image analysis have allowed us to study large neural tracts within the human brain. This is based on the principle of diffusion tensor MRI that is similar to that of diffusion-weighted imaging but takes magnitude and direction of the diffusion of water into account. Using this technique we have been able to define large neur...

What does fMRI tell us about neuronal activity?

In recent years, cognitive neuroscientists have taken great advantage of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as a non-invasive method of measuring neuronal activity in the human brain. But what exactly does fMRI tell us? We know that its signals arise from changes in local haemodynamics that, in turn, result from alterations in neuronal activity, but exactly how neuronal activity, haem...
